Using CoPilot to generate No. Series
With the release of Business Central 2025(v26) Preview, I was eager to explore the new and planned updates. One feature that caught my attention was "Suggest Number Series with Copilot", so I wanted to see how well Copilot could generate them based on simple prompts.
Overview of the Feature from MS
Getting started quickly with new implementations and recurring maintenance in Business Central setup saves companies time and money. Copilot aims to reduce the time needed to set up number series and streamline their maintenance.
For example, when updating year- or month-based numbering for multiple draft and posted documents, manually adjusting each number series can be time-consuming. Copilot automates this process, making setup and updates quick and efficient.
Testing Copilot for Sales Order Number Series
I decided to test this feature by asking Copilot to create a new number series specifically for Sales Orders from Dynamics 365 Sales, with the starting sequence prefixed as SSO.
Expected Outcome:
๐น A brand-new Number Series starting with SSO-0001 or similar.
What Actually Happened:
๐น After clicking the Generate button, the result wasn’t what I expected.
๐น Instead of a fresh number series, Copilot suggested an existing No. Series (S-ORD) that was already configured in the system with exact range too
Observations & Limitations
- The system presented two options: Keep the generated number series or Regenerate it.
- While you can delete the suggestion, you cannot edit the "Starting No." directly.
- Encouraged by the first test, I attempted to generate a brand-new number series for Projects. However, this time I encountered an error message, preventing the creation of the number series.
Conclusion
๐น Does it work as expected? Not entirely from my experience
๐น While Copilot can generate number series, it seems to suggest existing ones instead of creating new ones which is fine if it increasing the range or let me edit it (that is what I was expected)
๐น The feature is still in Preview, so improvements are expected before full release.
I was hoping for a more intelligent, context-aware suggestion system, but for now, it’s a promising feature that could significantly reduce setup time once refined.
What do you think about Copilot in Business Central? Have you tested it yet? Did it work for you as expected?
